Travel Tips

Safety

  • The City of Iasi, like many other cities in Romania, is very safe. 
  • The City of Iasi is in many safety tops of safety in Europe. 
  • Urban awareness is advisable, like anywhere else, but do not bother much.  
  • Pay attention to the cars in the streets. Do not cross on red lights. 
  • Tap water is safe to drink anywhere in the city of Iasi. 
  • If you need immediate guidance or help, ask people in the street. They usually know English and they will help. 

Money

  • Romanian Bancnotes Examples >>
  • Romanian Currency is LEI (or RON inside banks).
  • The exchange rate is about 1 Euro for 4.8 LEI
  • Do not change money at the airport
  • Anywhere else in the city (exchange points or banks) is safe to change money, if you need cash.
  • You can pay by card almost anywhere.
  • But not in taxis, farmers market, or artisan fares where you need to have cash. 
  • Phone apps are also largely available for payments. 
  • REVOLUT card is used and the vendors usually accept it. 
  • There are plenty of ATMs to withdraw money from. The most common banks with safe & secure ATMs are BCR, BRD, or Banca Transilvania.
  • In restaurants, a main course is around 25-50 Lei (5-10 Euro), soups around 10-20 Lei (2-4 Euro), soft drinks start from 1,5 Euro while alcohol from 2 Euro.
  • In restaurants tipping is common and expected but you will not be told anything if you do not do it. Tipping is usually around 10%. 

Food

  • Street Food is cheap and quite good. We can find good and cheap products on the street at simigeries as PETRU, or LUCA. 
  • Supermarkets are within 10 minutes walk everywhere in the city. 
  •  Agri-food markets can be a very interesting experience, but in this period we can not buy too many local fruits or vegetables there.
